Meet Eli Lilly's new oral version of Mounjaro - Foundayo (Orforglipron)

Weight loss treatments have evolved rapidly in recent years, offering new hope for people seeking effective and convenient options. Eli Lilly’s newly FDA-approved oral tablet, Foundayo (orforglipron), joins this growing field as an alternative to injectable medications like Mounjaro and Wegovy, and in direct competition with Novo Nordisk's current offering of oral semaglutide (OZempic/Wegovy), which is available in the UK as Rybelsus.

What is Foundayo and How Does It Work?

Foundayo contains orforglipron, a new oral medication designed to support weight loss by targeting the same pathways as injectable GLP-1 receptor agonists. These drugs mimic a hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1), which helps regulate appetite and blood sugar levels.

Unlike Mounjaro (tirzepatide) and Wegovy (semaglutide), which require injections, Foundayo offers a pill form that many people may find easier to take. Much like it's predecessor, it works by:

  • Reducing hunger signals to help control appetite

  • Slowing stomach emptying to increase feelings of fullness

  • Improving blood sugar control, which can reduce cravings and energy dips

Clinical trials have shown that orforglipron can lead to meaningful weight loss when combined with lifestyle changes. While the exact amount varies, some participants lost 10% or more of their body weight over several months.

Foundayo Compared to Injectable Options

Injectable GLP-1 receptor agonists like Mounjaro and Wegovy have been popular for weight management due to their strong effects. However, injections can be a barrier for people who dislike needles or have trouble with self-administration.

Foundayo offers several advantages:

  • Oral convenience: No needles, no injections, just a daily pill

  • Similar mechanism: Targets GLP-1 receptors like Mounjaro and Wegovy

  • Potential for fewer side effects: Early data suggests a tolerable side effect profile

That said, injectable options may still be preferred for some patients based on individual response or medical advice. Foundayo expands choices, making weight management more accessible.

How Foundayo Supports Weight Loss with Diet and Nutrition

Medications like Foundayo work best when paired with healthy eating and lifestyle habits. The drug helps reduce appetite and cravings, but it does not replace the need for good nutrition.

Here are ways to maximize Foundayo’s benefits through diet:

  • Focus on whole foods: Vegetables, fruits, lean proteins, and whole grains provide nutrients and fiber that support fullness

  • Control portion sizes: Smaller, balanced meals help maintain steady energy and prevent overeating

  • Limit processed foods and sugars: These can trigger cravings and reduce the medication’s effectiveness

  • Stay hydrated: Drinking water supports metabolism and can reduce false hunger signals

Combining Foundayo with a structured nutrition plan creates a strong foundation for sustainable weight loss.

Transforming Bad Habits into Good Ones

Weight management is not just about medication and diet; it also involves changing behaviors that contribute to weight gain. Foundayo can help reduce appetite, but lasting success depends on building healthier habits.

Here are practical steps to transform habits:

  • Identify triggers: Notice when and why you overeat or choose unhealthy foods

  • Replace unhealthy snacks with nutritious alternatives like nuts, fruits, or yogurt

  • Plan meals and snacks to avoid impulsive eating

  • Incorporate regular physical activity to boost metabolism and mood

  • Practice mindful eating: Slow down, savor food, and listen to hunger cues

Small, consistent changes build momentum. Foundayo can support these efforts by making it easier to control hunger and cravings.

Scientific Research Behind Orforglipron and Weight Management

Foundayo’s approval is based on rigorous clinical trials demonstrating its safety and effectiveness. Studies compared orforglipron to placebo in adults with overweight or obesity, showing:

  • Significant weight loss over 24 to 52 weeks

  • Improvements in blood sugar and metabolic markers

  • A manageable side effect profile, mostly mild gastrointestinal symptoms

Researchers highlight that orforglipron’s oral delivery is a breakthrough, offering a new option for patients who want the benefits of GLP-1 receptor agonists without injections.

Ongoing studies will continue to explore long-term effects and how Foundayo compares directly to other medications like Mounjaro and Wegovy.

Who is it for?

The market is growing for weight loss medications, with Novo Nordisk being the OGs with Victoza, Saxenda, Ozempic, Rybelsus and Wegovy. Eli Lilly are hot on their heels with Mounjaro and now Foundayo, adding further options for people who want effective weight management without injections. It fits well for those who:

  • Prefer oral medication over injections

  • Are looking for support to reduce appetite and cravings

  • Want to combine medication with diet and lifestyle changes

When will it be available in the UK?

Whilst Foundayo has received formal approval in the USA by the Food & Drug Administration, it may be quite a few months until it is approved in the UK by the MHRA, with further time needed for it to become manufactured for UK patients & distributed via the official UK supply chain for medications. We are expecting approval during Q2/Q3 of the year and potential release Q4 2026 / Q1 2027.

In the meantime, Rybelsus is available off-label as a potential alternative to injectables. Currently licensed for treating diabetes, Rybelsus has shown positive clinical results for weight loss, leading to approval for weight loss in the USA and being rebranded as the "Wegovy Tablet".

Wegovy now comes as a tablet in the USA, whilst already being available in the UK as Rybelsus, currently used for diabetic patients

Is it right for me?

Still, medication is just one part of the journey. Success depends on commitment to healthy eating, physical activity, and habit changes. Medications can make this easier by reducing hunger and helping control food intake but the long term success comes from within you and your longer term changes.
